GREE's mobile social games network to be 'borderless', to hit Q2 2012
And still, we know little about just exactly how the Japanese social game publisher's platform will work. GREE has revealed a sliver of information about its upcoming mobile social games network, namely that it will be "borderless". While company says this means that users will enjoy single sign-on into GREE on their iPhone or Android phone, we hope this means cross-platform play.
The company goes on to say that the platform will feature a global payment solution and a series of "robust out-of-network cross promotional opportunities," which sounds to us a lot like in-game advertisements. The OpenFeint-powered platform will provide developers with rich analytics tools, meaning game makers will be able to read and evaluate your actions within the GREE games you play. "This new GREE platform continues to show the commitment we have to building a truly global, free-to-play ecosystem for mobile developers," GREE founder and CEO Yoshikazu Tanaka said in a release. "Our goal is to offer the best social gaming experience to players around the world. GREE worldwide has the largest cross-platform network and this is a step closer to our goal of reaching one billion users."
GREE's mobile social games network will offer games discovery to players as well as all the latest social features. Of course, leaderboards and achievements will be a staple in GREE's offering. However, the company plans to take the mobile social games world by storm in Q2 2012, or as early as April. With DeNA's Mobage network already out of beta testing on Android and Zynga's Project Z on the horizon, that sounds like a lifetime.

FarmVille Poetry Corner: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Cheryll
We didn't have FarmVille in 1823, but one fan, Cheryll, certainly has an ear for Clement Clarke Moore's meter, and if he played FarmVille today, his most famous poem would probably sound something like hers.
Cheryll recently submitted a parody of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to FarmVille Freak. In eleven stanzas, which is three shy of Moore's original, Cheryll tells the story of playing FarmVille while everyone else is asleep. The game keeps her up all night with a flurry of holiday quests, pop-ups, expansions, sync errors, animals to feed, buildings to construct, and so much more.
And much like Mimidursley's FarmVille Jingle Bells from last week, Cheryll expresses her love for FarmVille, one that certainly comes bundled with a great deal of frustration too. But it's that level of honesty that makes Cheryll's poem so funny, heartfelt, and genuinely great. Read on below:

Look, if the creator of Angry Birds can put out a cookbook for Pete's sake, then Fruit Ninja can get its own official plush toys. Here's the thing, Halfbrick: Rovio has a cast of adorable characters with which to make plush toys. You have ... an old guy and some fruit--not exactly ready to leap off the shelves. Nevertheless, the Fruit Ninja maker has released two official plush toys.
The first is a plush version of the sensei you see in the game daily (we know it's daily) for $15.99. The second? A watermelon with eyes and a headband that's split in half for $14.99. Wait a second, the watermelon has eyes and a headband! That looks freaking adorable, now take us to where we put the magic numbers in. Now that we're out 15 bucks, it looks like Fruit Ninja has finally "arrived". (You can also buy both in a bundle for $29--some deal, huh?)
Well, we'd take the fact that Halfbrick plans to open a studio dedicated entirely to the Fruit Ninja sequel as evidence of that. But really, we're smelling a trend here: Not only is Rovio in on the plush toys now, but so is Zynga with more FarmVille plush toys than we can afford shake a stick at. And if Fruit Ninja has arrived, where are our customizable Sims plush toys?

Pioneer Trail PSA: Holiday Hogknocker Part II now available
Last week, we brought you a complete look at the Holiday Hogknocker feature in Pioneer Trail, which helps lead us into the game's holiday season by introducing cute Hogknocker Pigs and mystery crates to the game. This feature is split into three timed goals, and at the time of the feature's launch, only the first goal is available. If you're trying to keep up, you (in theory) should be well on your way to finishing that first goal, if you haven't finished it off completely already. That's important, as Part II of the feature - The Trouble with Truffles - has officially been launched as a way to start your week off with a bang.
As a reminder, The Trouble with Truffles is available to users Level 22 and above, and you'll have five days to complete it. Here are the required tasks:
Tend 60 Adult Spotted Pigs
Collect 25 Truffles
Collect 30 Hog Calls
You'll need to ask your friends for the Hog Calls via individual friend requests, and while you can do the same with the Truffles, you can also find those by chopping into trees. You must accept this goal in your game before December 9, so that still gives you a few days to finish off Part I of this series, if you're a bit behind. Just remember to accept it into your game before that date, or your chance at 1,000 XP, a Hogknocker Crate and a Hogknocker Piglet will vanish from the game, along with the goal.

CityVille The Mighty Pucks Timed Goal: Everything you need to know
If you're ready for a fast-paced goal in CityVille, then take to the ice and help Paul teach some kids how to play hockey in the game's newest timed goal: The Mighty Pucks (a reference to the Mighty Ducks, of course). This newest timed goal is open to users Level 50 or above, and it has just a two day time limit for the Gold Trophy (and the top prize). Here's how to get things done - and fast!
Gather 16 Hockey Sticks
Send 75 Tour Buses
Collect from 4 Grade Schools
You'll need to ask your friends for the Hockey Sticks, and while you're waiting for your friends' help, you can visit their towns to send Tour Buses to their businesses. The Grade School requirement might slow you down a bit, unless you have more than one school in your town, in which case the two-day time limit shouldn't really be a factor.
If you can complete these three tasks within 48 hours, or two days, you'll receive the Gold Trophy, 10,000 coins and the Frozen Lake decoration. This Frozen Lake offers a 27% payout bonus to surrounding homes and buildings, and if it looks familiar to you, that's because it was originally available to purchase in the game's store for 35 City Cash.
If you can't finish this goal within the first two days, but finish in under 72 hours, you'll receive the Silver Trophy, 7,500 coins and 5 energy, while finishing at any time after that will give you just the Bronze Trophy and 5,000 coins. There doesn't seem to be a time limit for when you need to start this goal in your city, but as it's themed to winter, I wouldn't expect it to stick around long after the season passes. If you have any interest in the Frozen Lake, make sure to start and finish this goal now while you still can.

CityVille City Music Hall: Everything you need to know
Remember Alexi? He was CityVille's resident dance instructor, and he's back again for the holiday season to prepare a production of the Nutcracker in your town. Of course, you'll need a new place to hold this grand event, so welcome the City Music Hall to your game! The City Music Hall is a fairly complex feature, and it comes with its own version of a Timed Goal.
First things first, you'll need to be at least Level 34 to access the City Music Hall (and its goal) in your game. The goal for this feature is called "A Night at the Ballet," and it's represented by a Nutcracker in your goal list on the left side of the screen. The tasks for completing it are simple:
Place the City Music Hall
Complete City Music Hall
This is a goal similar to most every Community Building goal we see released in the game, but here you're being timed. This is a voluntary time limit however, so you won't actually be required to finish the building before the time is up to keep it. However, if you can rush through and complete the building within seven days (for the Gold Trophy), you'll receive a very special reward for your efforts.
To be specific, the Gold Trophy rewards you with the Chekhov Estate, a home that offers a whopping 2,500 citizens to start, and can be upgraded to 4,500 citizens via random population boosts when collecting its rent. Speaking of, the rent for this one is 500 coins every 24 hours. If you can't finish the goal within that time frame, you'll also have a chance at 50,000 coins and 1,000 Goods at the Silver Trophy level or just 25,000 coins for the Bronze Trophy.
So how do you actually complete the City Music Hall? Well, this one is split into three different requirements, similar to the Tonga Tower or French Riviera Casino (I told you it was complex). You'll need to collect building materials to finish the actual building's construction, along with two other tasks:
Gather Parts
Master Either the Theater Prop Shop or Nutcracker Shop to Level 3
Master Peanuts to Level 2
Peanuts take 20 hours to grow on their own, so if you haven't started mastering that particular crop just yet, you'll definitely want to work ahead on that task before ever activating this City Music Hall timed goal in your game (that is, just the first star of mastery takes 50 harvests, so it's a time consuming process to be sure).
As for the Nutcracker Shop or Theater Prop Shop, both of these cost coins in the game's store. the Nutcracker Shop costs 7,200 coins and requires 180 Goods to operate, while the Theater Prop Shop costs 6,100 coins and requires 150 Goods to operate. Both of these Businesses require you to collect and supply them 150 times (in total) to reach Level 3. Again, since these two businesses are available to purchase within the game's store without having actually started this goal in your game, you'll want to work on upgrading them before putting yourself under the time limit of the Night at the Ballet goal.
Finally, as for the building parts for the actual City Music Hall, you'll need to collect 40 in all:

FarmVille Magic Snowman: Everything you need to know
We've had about a week to get a head-start on building our Ice Palaces in FarmVille, and now we finally have a place to put all of those Magic Snowflakes: the Magic Snowman. This snowman is given to you for free when logging into the game, and it starts out incredibly plain - just a few balls of snow in the basic shape of a snowman. As you collect items like Magic Snowflakes and Magic Top Hats, you'll be able to redeem those items for special prizes. However, unlike other item collection events in FarmVille, you'll need specific combinations of these items to actually redeem them.
For instance, the most basic prize is a piece of Aurora Fencing, and it requires two Magic Top Hats and one Magic Snowflake to earn. Here's a rundown of the other items in the event as of this writing.
Aurora Fence - 2 Hats / 1 Snowflake
Moon Tree - 10 Hats / 3 Snowflakes
Aurora Cat - 25 Hats / 6 Snowflakes
Star Bright Sheep - 50 Hats / 10 Snowflakes
Starry Pond - 85 Hats / 18 Snowflakes
Aurora Unicorn - 120 Hats / 28 Snowflakes

FarmVille Winter Wonderland Chapter 4 Goals: Everything you need to know

Remember, there are 12 goals here and only 14 days to complete them, which means that you don't have a lot of time to waste. If you've got enough land to plan ahead by planting certain crops before you actually reach their goals, I'd suggest doing just that as it definitely saves time in the long run. Either way, I wish you luck in completing all of these goals in time!

Want to differentiate your strategy social game from the rest of them? Then get involved. Chinese developer Barbily plans to do just that with its Facebook version of browser-based, sci-fi strategy MMO (massively multiplayer online game), Star Supremacy. The game launches today on Facebook, and already the Barbily team plans to engage its players by bringing the fight to them.
For starters, three Barbily GMs (game masters) will actively play Star Supremacy, controlling two advanced colonies each. Of course, all of these territories will be home to massive reserves of resources, which players can attack for major gains. Barbily will publish the coordinates of these developer-controlled colonies on the Star Supremacy Facebook fan page. However, Barbily warns that there will be consequences if players decide to set up trade routes through these colonies or organize large assaults.
In other words, just try and take it to the developers--they're waiting for a good fight. Like most Facebook game developers with new games, Barbily will give its players free in-game gifts when the fan page reaches 500 and 1,000 "Likes". But the Suzhou-based developer thinks it's far different from Zynga's lot of games.

As it turns out, we certainly weren't the only ones, as TechCrunch plainly called the social network out on its methodology (which we, too, questioned). Facebook almost immediately added a disclaimer describing how it arrived at the list in detail.
"This list was compiled by looking at the top games on Facebook with more than 100,000 monthly active users and giving priority to those games with the highest user satisfaction scores," the addendum reads on the Facebook blog. "The result is a list of the games that received the most user recommendations in 2011."
But EDGE reports that Facebook has recently renamed its list entirely from the "Most Popular Games in 2011" to the "Top Recommended Games of 2011." While this reflects Facebook's methodology much more accurately, it's interesting to see the company backtrack after such a heated response. For one, it speaks volumes to how seriously end-of-year lists are taken.

Battlefield maker EA DICE loses three to ngmoco's Sweden studio

A new year can often be a bittersweet experience, especially in the world of career moves. In this case, it's been sweet for DeNA-owned mobile game maker ngmoco and rather bitter for EA. DICE, the Swedish division of the veteran games publisher responsible for hit shooter franchise Battlefield and critically-acclaimed Mirror's Edge, has lost three staffers to ngmoco Sweden.
This is the second, third and fourth loss for EA to ngmoco in six months, the first being former EA-ran Easy Studios general manager Ben Cousins, who left in June 2011 to start the Stockholm-based studio. Cousins announced the new hires through his Twitter account, name-dropping senior programmer Torbjørn Lædre, senior artist Wille Wintertidh and senior programmer Malte Hildigsson.
Collectively, the trio have experience with successful hardcore EA games ranging from the brand new Battlefield 3 to Mirror's Edge and Far Cry 2. Ngmoco Sweden has been keen on recruiting talent from traditional game developers, having snagged members of Crytek, German creator of the visually-stunning Crysis series, last year.
Ngmoco, largely responsible for bringing Japanese social game giant DeNA's mobile social games network, Mobage, to the Western world, is likely staffing up its Sweden studio to fill the network up with original games. Whether those games will skew toward shooter fans or folks who dig FarmVille is uncertain, but the lot it's hiring suggests the former.

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Color-changing sheep light up Tielovou's tree
Think of it as belated X'mas present. Four days after Christmas, FarmVille player Tielovou posted this animated screenshot in the official Zynga forums. Despite missing the game's last Farm of the Week Contest of 2011, Tielovou felt that this farm couldn't wait another year to show to people, and I've gotta agree, because this farm is definitely a winner. And believe me, we've seen tons of holiday tree farms this season.
According to Tielovou, this gigantic tree is made up of over 600 Mystery Seedlings that were carefully watered until they reached seven-eighths completion. Hay bales form the two presents beneath the tree and the star atop it. The present to the right remains untouched, while the one on the left appears opened, revealing three snow globes masquerading as presents.
Most amazing of all are the blinking Christmas lights, which are actually color-changing sheep that Zynga released last Spring, bred from the Chameleon Ewe and Chameleon Ram.

Remember when we suggested that The Sims Social get a hold of some big time features as a means of getting players back? Well, ask and you shall might receive, as Sims Social Fansite claims to have learned that cars are headed to Playfish's number one Facebook game. Better yet, the first drivable car in EA's crown jewel on Facebook will be the 2012 Toyota Prius V.
The fan site doesn't cite any sources, nor does it provide screen shots, so let's treat this as one helluva juicy rumor for The Sims Social fans. Sims Social Fansite believes that EA has signed a deal with Toyota to make the heavily-branded feature happen. Furthermore, the Prius V will be introduced to the game as a quest reward after Playfish runs an Alice in Wonderland theme the week of Jan. 19, according to Sims Social Fansite, and will only be usable for two weeks.
After Jan. 19, Toyota's green vehicle will arrive in the game as a quest reward for players that complete eco-friendly tasks like recycling and checking electrical appliances throughout a green-themed week of quests, the fan site reports. As of this writing, the article detailing this information has been removed from the website. CityVille Spanish Embassy: Everything you need to know
If you've been collecting Passport Stamps as part of the Welcome the World event in CityVille, you can now use those Passport Stamps in the new Spanish Embassy, a building that requires very little effort to build in your city. The base can be placed via the Spanish Embassy goal, and then takes just five energy to construct. You won't need to collect any building materials to finish it off; just spend the five energy and you'll be good to go.
Once you build the Spanish Embassy, you'll be able to use your Passport Stamps to earn six limited edition items. Interestingly, some of these items are those that you can also purchase in the store, so the lineup here is actually pretty disappointing (that is, I personally would've rather seen six entirely new items than some reused from the store). Either way, here's the lineup of prizes, and how many Passport Stamps you'll need to earn them.
Flamenco Dancer - 25 Stamps
Mendoza Mansion - 50 Stamps
Estrada Cottage - 60 Stamps
Club Del Sol - 60 Stamps

Dragons of Atlantis soars onto Kongregate, more to come from Kabam
Dragons are a basically a known commodity to "hardcore" gamers. We're willing to beat they've slain at least a few gajillion on average. Kongregate, a leading online games portal for traditional gamers, thinks it needs even more dragons. To that end, Kongregate has worked with Kabam to bring its top game, Dragons of Atlantis, to its platform. But that's just the beginning.
Kabam plans to bring even more of its strategy social games to Kongregate's 16 million unique monthly players, with Dragons of Atlantis already playable there. The games slated for Kongregate in the coming weeks include The Godfather: Five Families and Thirst of Night. The developer has created a new technology, dubbed Pyramid, for multi-platform integration and distribution of its games on platforms like Kongregate.
"Kongregate is a great addition to our rapidly expanding mix of distribution partners," Kabam COO Chris Carvalho said in a release. "Kabam games provide the immersive and feature-rich experience Kongregate's audience of dedicated gamers seek, and this partnership allows us to expand on our multi-platform distribution approach and reach millions of additional core gamers. Additionally Kongregate's parent company GameStop provides us the potential to explore other unique avenues of promotion and distribution for our games."
We never thought we'd see the day when social games and GameStop crossed paths. This news follows Kabam games popping up as dedicated desktop apps through Pokki, another move to attract the core gamer crowd. Perhaps the stigma of "Facebook games = FarmVille" is too tough for Kabam's audience to see through. Regardless, Kabam is on the hunt.

Idle Games shows first game Idle Worship's true social colors [Video]
Since co-founding social game hit maker Playdom, Rick Thompson has grown tired of the friend bar beneath Faecbook games. No, scratch that: He's grown tired of the way traditional Facebook games operate ... period. His contempt for this arguably tired form of Facebook game has helped spawn Idle Games and its first ever Facebook game, Idle Worship.
We first heard word of the potentially revolutionary social game way back in April, and Idle Games has launched the game into a closed beta test before presenting it to the audience of TechCrunch Disrupt, an event in San Francisco celebrating tech startups ran by TechCrunch. The overall gameplay of Idle Worship hasn't changed since we first heard about it, but now we have fancy video that reveals more of what the game is all about.
Through Idle Games's Idle Engine, Idle Worship does away with the friend found in almost all social games. Instead, your island of Mudlings (the people you oversee with either benevolence or tyranny) will be surrounded by not only your friends' islands, but players' islands based on how their Facebook profiles match up with your own.
Going even further, the game will slowly curate which of your friendships are stronger by bringing more active friends closer to your island, which is always at the center, and pushing your inactive friends away from your island. And, according to Idle Games CEO Jeffrey Hyman, your interactions with your friends will send ripples throughout the entire game in real time.

Have the (retro) time of your life in Dirty Dancing on Facebook
When we first found that a Dirty Dancing Facebook game was in the works, I admittedly almost thought I was dreaming. But nay, it is, in fact, real and has officially launched on the platform. Toronto-based developer Social Game Universe and Lionsgate have released a retro-inspired social homage to one of the arguably greatest '80s flicks of all time. (Personally, it's not my schtick, but even I wouldn't argue with the 10.9 million fans of Dirty Dancing on Facebook.)
"We wanted to create a game that would not only capture the essence and aesthetic of the Dirty Dancing film, but also offer Facebook gamers an opportunity to experience it in a whole new way," Social Game Universe CEO Nathon Gunn said in a release. "By enabling players to partner with their Facebook friends to generate love and romance at Kellerman's, they can add their own unique spin to the game, creating a different social experience for each player."
Just like we heard before, players will essentially curate an 8-bit version of the Kellerman's Resort from the movie through little blasts of lovey-dovey stuff called Romance Waves, which will make your guests stay longer. Players, guided by either Johnny or Baby from the classic film (Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, respectively), perform dance rehearsals with combinations of different dance techniques to garner more Romance Waves.
Upon starting the game, each player chooses their own style of dance from a small selection, which becomes their permanent style. When recruiting friends asynchronously for dance rehearsals comprised of three dancers, you will unlock new dance combinations and collect even more Romance Waves to keep guests falling in love, sticking around longer, and spending coins on your various attractions.
Dirty Dancing Facebook in Action
To keep faithful to its legendary source material, every Romance Wave blast will let out clips from songs featured in Dirty Dancing's Oscar-winning soundtrack. And as players discover new dance rehearsal combinations, they will unlock secret combinations for big Romance Wave rewards. Of course, you can also boost your progress by spending Watermelons, the game's paid currency, on decorations and attractions to get your guests to spend.
This all creates a cycle of finding new dance routines through combining your friends' dance styles in new ways, bursts of Romance and expanding and restoring your version of the Kellerman's Resort. As you keep you and your friends' feet tapping and romancing, you can take pictures of your resort and share them with friends as well as help them out by visiting. And hey, if you're patiently waiting for the next Dirty Dancing flick to hit in 2013, maybe this will hold you over.

Angry Birds is the top game on Google+ Games, Rovio exec says
Where else will the Angry Birds crash land into and dominate? Nintendo 3DS? Xbox 360? Your scientific calculator? Who knows, but according to All Things Digital, Rovio SVP of brand advertising and analytics Wibe Wagemans said yesterday at the Mobile Future Forward conference in Seattle, Wash. that Angry Birds is the number on game on Google+ Games.
Granted, that's out of all 16 games on the platform right now, but some of those games were put there by the likes of major social game creators like Zynga, Wooga, EA and Playdom. Wagemans, formerly an executive on Microsoft's Bing team, went on to say that Rovio has grown faster in the past two years than companies like MySpace, YouTube, Amazon and Skype. He also said, "We are now the fastest-growing consumer brand in history," ATD reports.
When you think about it, though: Not only is the Angry Birds game on nearly every gaming platform under the sun, but the little wingless cartoons and their amorphous green piglet enemies have been transformed into plush toys, t-shirts, board games, cook books, a feature film--need I go on?

Simply put, the western world is hooked on Angry Birds (it's science, remember?) and soon so will the East, if Rovio has any say in it. Survey: Bejeweled Blitz could sharpen old noggin in baby boomers
For the young, and now the old, it looks like PopCap games are good for everyone. In a survey of over 10,000 U.S. residents conducted by researcher Susan K. Whitbourne, Ph.D., 47 percent of older adults who play Bejeweled Blitz regularly reported feeling sharper while performing tasks.
Whitbourne, a psychology researcher at University of Massachusetts Amherst, presented her findings at this year's American Psychological Association's (APA) convention in Washington D.C. According to PopCap, Whitbourne believes that Bejeweled Blitz could be a viable platform for improving cognitive skills in older adults because it involves several of the skills that have been shown the be improved after playing video games.
Designed to see whether Whitbourne's inklings checked out, the survey found that 22.4 percent of participants aged 65 and over found their ability to see patterns improved. A small 23.9 percent of the same group reported that they could perform timed tasks more quickly after playing the game regularly. While the survey consisted of 10,331 adults aged 18 to 80-years-old, 41 percent of those were 50-years-old and over (and 83 percent total were women). And it's worth nothing that over 78 percent of participants reported to have a college degree.
Nearly half (47.5 percent) of adults aged 50 and older said that they paid no attention to the 60-second countdown timer in Bejeweled Blitz, and 52.9 percent of those 65-years-old and over reported the same reaction. Both groups of older folks were less likely than those 18 to 24-years-old to report feeling anxious because of the timer. Overall, a whopping 66.4 percent said that the game's multiplier gems were positively motivating.
Whitbourne's findings were well-received by some at the convention, like Dr. Walter Boot, director of the Attention and Training Lab of the Department of Psychology at Florida State University. "I believe the work Dr. Whitbourne and her colleagues are doing, using Bejeweled Blitz, is both critical and exciting, and that more research like this needs to be done exploring not only the types of games that bring about cognitive benefits, but also the types of games older adults are willing to play and why," Boot said. "The best cognitive aging intervention in the world is useless if older adults aren't willing and able to engage in it."
Of course, PopCap has a vested interested in the various applications of its hit games. But these findings are interesting, nevertheless. Well, there you have it: It looks like PopCap games like Bejeweled have become the proverbial Coca-Cola of the games industry--not only are they delicious fun, but they're good for you, too!

Adult Swim Games Arcade brings some shock and awe to Facebook
Robot Unicorn Attack -- the most magical game of all time -- and its darker twin, Heavy Metal, now have company as their developer, Adult Swim Games, has finally decided to launch a stable of their games on Facebook yesterday.
Adult Swim, a cable network (on the same channel as the Cartoon Network) known for dozens of high-quality absurdist and shock comedy shows, runs a games portal that houses over a hundred absurdist and shock comedy online games. (However, there's no overlap between the two in terms of content. That is, you're not going to get a Robot Unicorn Attack show, or a Venture Bros. game, no matter how badly you want one.) Now a fraction of that portal is accessible via Facebook.
To give you an idea of what you'll be walking into, they've got titles like "Five Minutes to Kill Yourself Wedding Day", "Amateur Surgeon", "Pole Dance Party", "Death Row Diner", and "Radioactive Teddy Bear Zombies". Of course, Robot Unicorn Attack is also there, but it's only linked there, since it was released last September as a separate app.
